Huntington was named for Samuel Huntington, a judge, elected official, and loyalist in the American Revolution. He is also known for taking part in voting for and signing, the Declaration of Independence as well as the Articles of Confederation. The Wabash and Erie Canal was constructed in 1834 and added major trade and industry to the local economy. The county of Huntington was officially organized in 1834. By 1849, Huntington had a population of 700 and about 150 homes. Today, it is home to Huntington University and its young students. The school is a Christian liberal arts college offering graduate and undergraduate programs in over 70 academic areas. The history and charm of the town combined with the seasonal climate to create a picturesque Midwestern town.
Founded in 1897, Huntington University was opened by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Today, it is a beautiful campus with lakeside views and contemporary buildings. Huntington University is located on a contemporary, lakeside campus of about 160 acres. Thriving academic programs include flourishing programs in film, animation, exercise science and more. It has been on the Princeton Review’s “Best in the Midwest” list and Forbes.com has listed the university as one of America’s Best Colleges. The campus is beautiful year-round but particularly stunning in autumn.
Outdoor fun is always easy to find in this part of the world. The Thornhill Nature Preserve is a 77-acre nature preserve on the campus of Huntington University. It provides outdoor learning opportunities, ropes course, and hosts various public events. There are also a lot of parks in the area for those who love to get outside in the pretty weather in the spring and summer. The close by city of South Whitley throws a yearly Fall Fest as the plant life changes and the weather cools. Many people from all over the area out to rejoice in the harvest, a fresh school year and the magnificence of the season.
